Short Story: The Truth Behind the "Low Price" of Lighters
A customer once shared the experience of his Indonesian friend. The Indonesian friend bought lighters at a very low price at the Canton Fair - the Chinese service provider quoted less than $0.2 per piece. The friend planned to sell them in Indonesia at $0.6 per piece and make a good profit. However, in order to maximize profits, the friend decided to bargain further with the Chinese service provider and reduce the price to $0.08 per piece. The Chinese factory made several modifications based on customer requirements: reducing the shell, replacing the sealing ring with glue, using a plastic windshield, reducing the gas price, and eliminating the gas regulator. In the end, the cost of each lighter was reduced to $0.08. The service provider informed the Indonesian friend that although these modified lighters met the low price requirements, their quality was greatly reduced, they could only be used 5 times, and had a limited shelf life.
A few months later, the Indonesian retailer sold these lighters online for $0.6, and some buyers began to complain on social platforms: "Made in China is garbage." However, the retailer did not disclose that the actual selling price of these products was only 8 cents.
